AWS has been the recipient of much hype over the last couple months, but if you are still not familiar with it, or want an insider's look into its positioning, read this new Wired article: http://www.wired.com/techbiz/it/magaz...
Sean Sit: http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/04/21/who-are-the-biggest-users-of-amazon-web-services-its-not-startups/ Surprisingly, 'Who Are The Biggest Users of Amazon Web Services? It’s Not Startups.'
Alex Gleitz: Wow! I would not have expected that :-) Perhaps this line of thinking has to do with my own perceptions and the lack of knowledge about the architecture offerings...Would be interesting to see if large companies farm out what would be considered sensitive data or do they mask the identifiable personal (or supplier) information. What do you think?

Jaebock Lee posted Media discovery through Twitter
In the last class while we were discussing the problem of music recommendations and discovery, someone suggested that Twitter could be used as a tool for this. I came across this article while going through my feeds a few days afterwards and thought it was relevant enough to share: http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/05/12/... In short, the article talks about the company Blip and how it provide a way to suggest and discuss t...... [read more]

If you get a 503 message, it is because you are being too aggressive with the del.icio.us servers and got throttled. Here is the link that explains it:

Is anyone else having problems with the del.icio.us assignment. Everything was working fine and then suddenly I started getting this error. Is any one else experiencing the same thing. Looks like the server crashed.

i was thinking in today's lecture about transaction costs and how we keep hearing that transaction costs are virtually zero in the new economy. (I use 'transaction' loosely to refer to most, if not all interactions, such as information sharing) But today Andreas said that he had read someone determined that 1 GB transferred = 1 block of coal (or something like that). So really transaction costs are not zero. I'm wondering if we can model...... [read more]

I am following the London Mayoral Race somewhat (Yup, I am bored with the Hillary - Obama race here in US :-). Hitwise had a nice blog enty on what is happening with internet and London Voters. Some interesting facts: - Wikipedia is bigger than News and Media sites for voters who seek information on candidates - If we think site traffic is a predictor, Boris Johnson should win (lets see) - facebook sends a lot of traffic to at least two c...... Shaun Maguire: Very interesting data. Thanks for sharing. Also, is the voting restricted to residents of London? If so, I don't see how you can compare % of UK traffic to % of US traffic. One is a local election -- the other is national.

In reading "The Promise of Prediction Markets: A Roundtable" by The McKinsey Quarterly, I wanted to share this link with you, http://www.intrade.com/ Pretty much, these are stock options on real events where people bet by buying and selling them. The prices seen are the probabilities of that event taking place, it is pretty cool. Rgds., B Hernandez

Dr. Weigend mentioned Toby and his book in class on Monday. I also think he said he will be visiting class? Coincidentally, Slashdot had a review of his latest book today. They scored it a 9/10. Here is the link: http://books.slashdot.org/books/08/04... Cheers, Shaun

This is not extremely relevant to our course -- but it is interesting and in some senses, close to home. Think of the reaction if Andreas twittered: "Arrested!"
Andreas Weigend: This is cool indeed. Just having finished teaching 9 hours at Haas (UC Berkeley's GSB) today, I for a moment thought it was one of my students there :)

I added a section to the bottom of HW2 on the wiki for people to place links to their homepage. Seemed like an efficient way to visit everyone's site quickly and generate a lot of good data.

Shaun Maguire posted Prediction Markets
Professor Weigend briefly described prediction markets in class today. Specifically, he mentioned that if proper incentives are employed, people do an excellent job at predicting future events. Here is a recent article from Scientific American that talks about the Iowa Prediction Market and its success at predicting election outcomes over the last 15 years. http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=m...
Bin: There is a company called predictify in San Francisco Bay Area. They came to the spring career fair last week. I thought their business model is pretty interesting. Hopefully, professor will invite them to give use a talk. Collective intelligience is great, don't you think so? Here is a link to their company's site: http://www.predictify.com/
